games and violent crime. the city highways budget problems make the moves necessary. >> there are really no right answers here, just a question. how will you spend your declining city funds? it's a familiar story around the country. can san jose afford the special gang unit. >> we have to reorganize our police department to cuomo date the fact that we are losing 90 officers. >> reporter: can san jose afford the price it will pay if it cuts the gang unit. >> this is misplaced priorities. >> reporter: san jose police will still fight gang activity just without a special 21 officer unit doing it. the members of the unit say that's dangerous. the san jose police officers association took out a full page ad in the mercury news protesting the cuts which took effect today. >> the majority of homicides in san jose are gang related. we simply will not have the

resources to address gangs like yesterday. >> reporter: the police union counts 1,000 gang related arrests in a city that is said to have 50 active gangs and 9,000 gang members. they picked the spot where a 12- year-old was killed last year to hold the protest. >> there are people that believe we should close the lie march rice in order to be -- libraries in order to avoid cuts. i don't care that sentiment. >> reporter: mayor says it's a deli cat. >> we have dedicated solely gang suppression and moved them to another unit where they will do that and other things. >> reporter: san jose will be among the safest cities in america, he says. >> a lot of criples are going

to go -- crimes are going to go undetected. that is a sad day. >> reporter: politics plays a part in the fight. cops say the city is wasting $6 million for a project run by a former mayor. the mayor says if pensions weren't so high, there would be more money around. >> what happens to the officers? were they let go. >> there are 90 vacant positions in the city of san jose's police department. they won't be filled. some of these officers are part of the 90 in fill of officers that won't get filled. >> new positions that will no longer be open. >> they are vacant. >> mike, thank you very much. gunfire wounded four people last night in oakland. the shootings took place in the popular restaurant district. when officers arrived thy found four people injured and they were hospitalized. doctors say none of the injuries are life threatening. in oakland, a politician

has become a crime victim. city council member and mayoral candidate jean quan had her purse snatched walking to the neighborhood supermarket. she was heading to a safe way in the diamond district when a man grabbed her purse and took off. she was not hurt. she had a run in with oakland police when they accused her of interfering in a riot. the members of a southern california religious secretary have been found safe. two husbands of the group members record their wives missing saturday after one of the men found a purse with letters inside indicating a reunion with dead relatives following a catastrophic event. that prompted a massive search by helicopters, patrols and detectives from across los angeles county. the group was found unharmed, praying in a park in the antelope valley. >> we are okay. you see me.

i am okay. my son, the dog, we are okay. we eat, we do like you do. we are okay. >> the group of salvadorian immigrants included five adults and aisle children. they say they were praying against violence in schools and premarital sex. an emotional homecoming for an american hiker jailed in iran for more than a year. sara shourd says her reunion is bittersweet because her friends remain in jail. shourd is making a plea to iran's president for their israelis. releases. reporter: sara shourd embraced her mother, grateful to be back in the u.s. but the american released after 13 months in an iranian prison says this is no time to celebrate. >> my disappointment with not sharing this with shane and josh was crushing. i stand before you 1/3 free. >> reporter: when she left iran

last week, she left behind her fiance, shane bauer and her friend josh fattal. the three were detained on the iran,-rare border, charged with spying. >> it's time to clear up the misunderstanding that lead to our imprisonment. >> reporter: shourd used the new york news conference to explain she and bauer had jobs in syria and went hiking with fat tall to a popular iraq waterfall. >> we committed no crime and we are not spies. >> reporter: the iranian president arrived in new york on sunday to attend the u.n. general assembly. mahmoud ahmadinejad said releasing shourd was a humanitarian gesture that the u.s. should return. >> u.s. government should make a humanitarian gesture to release the iranians who were illegally arrested and detained. >> reporter: the mothers of bauer and fatal wouldn't comment on that but requested a meeting with the iranian president to appeal for their sons' freedom.

>> i love him so much. i want him home for his father, brother, grandparents. >> reporter: they say with shourd in their arms, they are redoubling their efforts to bring bauer and fatal home. ten days after the san bruno gas explosion, four people are hospitalized with severe injuries. all four of the victims are at st. francis memorial hospital burn center in san francisco. three of the four are breathing with the help of machines but they are expected to be taken off soon. all four suffered severe burns in the inferno. four people were killed. three are missing and are presumed dead. we could find out tomorrow where 100 potentially dangerous pg&e gas lines are located here. pg&e will release the information tomorrow afternoon. the california public utilities commission questioned the

information. the section of pipe that exploded is being examined to try to pinpoint the cause of the san bruno explosion. a freeway that won't be free tomorrow. how you can pay for the privilege in a special toll lane. east bay... for a price. ,, [ female announcer ] we know jerry brown was mayor of oakland, but what were the results? fact: brown promised to improve schools. but the drop out rate increased 50%, and the state had to take over the schools. fact: the city controller found employees paid for 22,000 hours...

price. julie watts drove ess lane on a nasty commute could get easier tomorrow in the east bay for a price. julie watts drove the new express lane on 680 to show us how it works and what commuters will pay for the privilege. driving on this stretch of 680 between pleasanton and milpitas can be slow going you -- unless you have a carpool.

starting tomorrow, you could be going solo and fly by traffic if you have one of these. it's the bay area's first express lane. about a half mile before each entrance you will find a toll pricing sign. tolls vary depending on congestion between 30 cents and six bucks. this is where you decide if you want to pay the price. if you do, grab your fastrak transponder and an automatic censor will charge you the fee. but, remember, once you are in the toll lane, you can't cross the double line which means you can't exit until you get to mission or the end of the road at 237. there are three entrances. the first is south of 84, then eight miles later and just south of mission. the new toll road opens at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and caltrans tells us they expect a bit of a learning curve so it could be slow going at first but the infrastructure is set up and ready to go. on 680,julie watts, cbs 5.

thanksgiving. it's a time to reflect on the bounty of the summer harvest. >> we are talking fall and a little rain. >> this was a true cold front moving through the bay area. usually you don't see it for another month but here it came. a lot of clouds outside. some showers. a tenth of an inch of rain. things are winding down in parts of the bay area. still outside a lot of clouds. you can see the low clouds, the shot from the radar. more of those will continue to form. out to the coastline, pretty gray and it will stay gray all night through. the rain has come to an end on the coastline. showers are showing up in parts of california. the showers continue through the central valley. they were popping up strong into the afternoon hours. a closer look, we can expect

good storms through the central valley across i-5 up to chico. they continue to roll in that direction and a wild evening there. things should settle down in the next couple of hours here. >> for the most part in the bay area we are looking good. the rain has come to an end. tomorrow lots of sunshine and warmer temperatures. 70s and 80s. as you head inside the bay, 60s and mid-70s. out to the coastline, patchy fog. temperatures are cool in the 50s and low 60s. 62 in pacifica. 61 san francisco. 68 san jose and 71 in fairfield. if you plan on traveling around the state, sunshine in the central valley. lots of 80s. high country partly cloudy skies. slight chance of showers tomorrow morning but that will come to an end by the afternoon. then 70s and 80s in yosemite and lake lake. high trough of low pressure is spinning around, whipping up

the front and driving it through the area. we will see partial clearing overnight as the clouds move eastward behind that. we have the fog starting to form. high pressure out here will move in and try to warm temperatures up for a day. after that, we will start to cool down as another trough will dive into the bay area. tomorrow morning a lot of low clouds and fog. leftover moisture from the system. usually fog forms throughout the night. tomorrow it will be slow to clear. cooler out to the coastline. still lots of sunshine inside the bay. that's where you will find temperatures in the 70s and 80s in morgan hill and gilroy. the coastline mainly in the 60s. east bay lots of sunshine into the afternoon. north bay, plenty of sunshine after morning fog. temperatures are comfortable, lots of 70s in most spots. 60s out to the coastline. 80 in fairfield. as we look to the next couple of days and the end of summer,

as san francisco had another chance to regain first place. the roller coaster ride the national league west continued today at san francisco. they had another chance of regaining first place, scoreless first inning against milwaukee. a charge in this one deep down the line. ryan braun robs him of a home run. later in the first, bases loaded, no more. jose guillen. giants up 4-0. that was plenty for barry zito. allowed two runs. giants are 9-2 winners.

in 5 and 2/3. they win 6-2. nice weekend. two out of three from the first place twins. two weeks in the season and the raiders have a quarterback controversy thanks to another heroic performance from bruce gradkowski. oakland hosting st. louis. no score. first quarter, the rookie for a touchdown. two touchdown in his second career game. 7-3 remains before the half. jason campbell picked off. 87 yards in the first half. did not get back on the field in the second half. he pulls on bruce gradkowski who gave a boost to the offense. adden played like a more determined runner. he had a 30-yarder in the third quarter. he had 145 yards on 30 carries in the game, second career game with over 100 yards. bruce gradkowski finishes with a
